Tomorrow is the Opening Day for the Washington Nationals. The Caps also have a game tomorrow night, which most likely means active players will NOT be at the 1:05 game (possible but unlikely).

HOWEVER it does mean that there is a slight possibility that Mike Green and Tom Poti will be around. Sweet baby jesus I might not be able to sleep tonight.

The thought of even being able to see to see this in person will keep me up all night

well that didn’t end as we expected

Caps have played the Habs three times this season and two of those three games were some of the best hockey I’ve seen.

Tonight’s game was a bit different. First period reminded me of the team we all fell in love with. And there were some great looks in the 3rd (missed the 2nd due to concourse food search) but they just couldn’t seal the deal. It wasn’t the cardiac Caps, rather the prude on prom night.

Came thisclose to giving us what we wanted and in the end denied us the pleasure of winning. Although we did get this, serious heavy petting by Ovie:

My boy Greenie got an assist tonight with pretty stick handling pass in front of the net to Old Man Knubs. swoooooooooon.

But, with this all said, as a BU girl I can’t believe we lost to Brian FREAKING Gionta. That kid just can’t leave us alone. It’s like the varisty cheerleader from the rival town winning homecoming queen. NOT COOL.

All I want for Christmas…

There is nothing I don’t love about this post. Save for wishing it was just a little bit longer. Or more videos of cute hockey players lip syncing to the best of Mariah Carey.

Notable notes:

A large percentage of the Belfast Giants went to college.
An even larger percentage are alums/former players of Hockey East Schools, including UNH, Maine and Providence.
The scene stealers are two guys from the US…the opener from NJ, #8 Tim Cook and the giant dancing elf, #33 from Mike Hoffman.
My guilty pleasure is the hair-brush-singing/ hallway dancing leader #33 Craig Peacock. He’s only 22 but sweet baby Jesus he’s got some moves and sweet forearms.

It’s August. Development game camp has been over for just under a month and training camp is on the horizon. Contracts have been signed for the 09-10 season. Some of the guys are gone to greener, or more luctrative pastures. Many of our guys are recovering from surgeries, illnesses and injuries from the grueling playoff season.

But one thing is certain for all of our guys: they are ready for for the season. And, so are we.

Our calendars are cleared. Our Caps Convention tickets are purchased. Hundreds of photos have alreay been put online, right Cvandy?

We’re ready. Are you?

The Afternoon After

It always seems to come down to one game, doesn’t it? We’ve all got thoughts to share on this incredible 2008-2009 Capitals season and the horrific train wreck of a game that ended it, but it’ll take some time to process everything. I think I’ve gone through all of the stages of grief (what are there, five? seven?) and I’ll be roller-coastering through them again many times in the coming days.

But hey, that’s how we started the season – with a team party at Six Flags.

So here’s to the players, the coaches, the owners and most importantly the fans. To our season ticket holder family. To the Caps Ladies…

And to Brooks Laich and Matt Bradley, stay out of trouble during the summer. We see you giggling, Laich. No funny business! (Unless you call us first.)

We here at Caps Ladies… are looking back on the first half of the season with smiles all around. Our boys are doing excellent, despite some trying injuries keeping our best guys out of the line-up and some confusion with what exactly each player should be doing (HELLO Mike Green, I love you and all but PLEASE be a defense men if only for 80% of the game…)

We all waited, with baited breath, to see what our dear Ovie would do for the skills competition and definitely were not disappointed. Although this Caps Lady… was watching in a crowded bar, sans sound, so I’m not sure what the announcers thought of this shot, but we in the bar loved it!

I have to say, watching it again I still laugh out loud and do enjoy the “Superman” music. Ovie DEFINITELY is a superman!

And the kid continued to wow the audience DESPITE not being voted an All-Star starter (Really? People this is crazy!) He won the damn game for the East in a shootout. Of course he did, he’s that kind of player. And not to mention he had two goals and two assists.

We love Ovie in DC and just hope that someday the rest of the NHL-fan-nation will come around and see what this kid’s got to offer fans of the sport and fans of the players. He’s got something special and us Caps Ladies… can’t wait to see him on Saturday, back in the Verizon Center with his faithful fans.

To my dearest Capitals,

Please please please come home! We miss you. We miss your smiling faces and rough hits. We love the opportunity to see you take on the Western Conference but don’t enjoy seeing you not coming away with the W. We think it’s wonderful that you’re giving those western states at glimpse at your amazingness (and HOTNESS) but really, they can’t appreciate it. They would just be band wagoners in this train of love for the Caps and really, you don’t want that? Especially when you’ve got a dedicated fan base back home, including three lovely ladies waiting for your return.

Wednesday night can’t come soon enough.

Nothing personal, John Erskine, but I’m giving you a 2008-2009 preview because I have to

John Erskine irks me. (See what I did there?) There’s always one on every team, that guy who makes you groan in frustration when you notice he’s out there. Our #4 is a tough defenseman, but he doesn’t throw his weight around nearly enough. And on his bad days, the opposing team skates around him like he’s a traffic cone. Quick feet, Erskine! Skate like you mean it!

Erskine does have the distinction of getting into – and ending – the first fight of the 2008-2009 season, against Eric Boulton of the Atlanta Thrashers:

He signed with the Capitals on September 14, 2006, coming to D.C. from the New York Islanders, and scored 9 points (2 goals/7 assists) in 51 games during the 2007-2008 season. He lists ‘Entourage’ as his favorite show and the National Zoo as his favorite D.C. attraction.

Teeth? We don''t need no ssssstinking teeth!

So John, here’s to a fresh start and a solid heavy-hitting season. Because honestly, after a few beers, some of us wonder what secrets you hold to guarantee a spot on the bench night after night. But in the spirit of the new season, here’s to you, John Erskine! May you find the shortest way to the puck and arrive in ill humor – preferably taking out Danny Briere along the way.

Hump Day Hotties

Caps Ladies… were not original in our thought to take a deeper (and by deeper, I mean completely superficial) look into the athletes we know and love, we were inspired by the very funny and witty Ladies… Check ‘em out, they are hilarious and write about all sports and all different types of athletes. We here at Caps Ladies… appreciate all that they do for us as readers, but really wanted to dedicate some pages on the internets to our favorite team, the Washington Capitals. And in honor of those Ladies… I’m doing our own Hump Day Hotties where we simply oogle good lookin’ guys on Hump Day.

And now, on to my hotties for the week, which involved me doing a lot of google image searching, and yet I can’t figure out how to do a “jump.” Please bear with me!

I have to start off any hotties list with my one, my only, Mike Green.

I could go on and on and on about Mike Green, but I won’t. Instead I’ll switch to his BFF Brooks Laich.

And since they are BFF, I can’t do one Caps Cribs without doing the others…

And last, but definitely not least, AO. He’s not the hottest looking guy on the team, but damn the guy is hot on ice. I scoured the internets and found the hottest picture I could find. I leave you with this:

Fan Favorite Matt Bradley!

I’m not sure there isn’t to like about this guy. He’s a hard worker and is a team-member. He likes to recycle and keeps a special trash can in the locker room just for bottles. He may be razzed by the team, but he keeps strong. He even did a PSA for the Ocean Conservatory. And protects our fine Nation as Poncho.

During the 2007-08 season in a game versus the Senators, when the shoott-out went into the 11th round Brads jumped over the boards and went in for the kill. And kill he did, winning for the Caps in the 12th, and final round. “It got so bad I had to hop over the bench and take things into my own hands.”

He’s not afraid to throw a punch or sport a black-eye, which to any of the Caps Ladies… is pretty hot.

But Caps Ladies… might love Brads for his innocence. During the Caps vs Bruins game last fall, the Caps were killing the beantown bears. The score had already gotten us free wings, but we wanted more. We wanted 10 and made sure the team heard our request. And hear they did.

“We heard them. [Matt Bradley] was like: ‘The fans wanted it, and I am a fan favorite, so I had to give them what they wanted.” – Brooks Laich

Fan favorite? What? Sure, okay. Brads you can be our fan favorite if you keep up the scoring, the fighting, the black eyes and the green locker room.

This summer he was a guest blogger on Yahoo NHL blog, and outlined the 5 ways he’d change the NHL. He’s pretty damn funny.

His best ideas include:

“All the first and second line players have to play wrong-handed. Let’s level the playing field a bit for those of us on the third and fourth lines. I bet these guys would adapt, no problem. They’d probably have wicked backhands, too.

I automatically get to play on Alex Ovechkin’s line every game. I’ve talked to Coach Boudreau about this before, but it hasn’t gotten anywhere. If I’m in charge, I’d make it a league rule and take the decision out of his hands. Let’s add 10 years to my contract while we’re at it so Ovie doesn’t have to worry about changing linemates as he’s hitting his prime.”

Whaddaguy, huh? I certainly can’t wait to see him back out on the ice!
